Exhibition at the Center for Artists' Publications
From 1970 to 2005, Edition S Press was a publisher of experimental literature, concrete poetry, Beat poetry, and poetry performance. Using audio tapes, audio and video cassettes, and media packages, it pioneered new forms of publishing acoustic art. Over 80 editions bring together works by artists from Europe, the U.S., and the Soviet Union.
Many were created during the Cold War and demonstrate how poetry and sound art became forms of expression for resistance and artistic freedom. Especially today, in light of the global rise of authoritarian tendencies, these works seem astonishingly relevant. The exhibition tells the story of Edition S Press and shows how a small West German publishing house helped shape international art history. On display and available for listening are numerous audio and video works, as well as programs, posters, photographs, flyers, and press materials.
