Venice in the age of the Baroque
On a leisurely tour through a thousand years of Venetian history, selected examples of art and culture from the Middle Ages to modern times are presented. In a multi-part series, Dr. Donatella Chiancone-Schneider, who was born in Venice and studied art history there, presents hand-picked aspects of painting, sculpture and architecture as well as music, theater and traditions. She discusses personalities and works from the Serenissima as well as works that were created abroad under the fascination for the water city and are still strongly associated with it in the collective imagination today. This retrospective is made even more fascinating by very special illustrations: Old Master paintings, early photographs from the 1850s onwards (some hand-colored!) and previously unpublished prints by the author.
The planned stops on this journey through 17th century Venice include: the Salute church and the baroque palaces on the Grand Canal, the Bridge of Sighs, the ghetto and the "Merchant of Venice", the artists Marietta, Giulia and Rosalba as well as the Commedia dell' arte.
As we are not planning a Box Office, please register for the lecture.
