Aliens land on Earth to explore. The FBI and NASA disrupt their peaceful mission, forcing them to flee. One alien stays behind and seeks refuge in a suburb. That’s where 10-year-old Elliott lives with his family. When Elliott discovers the alien, they become friends. He names him E.T. and hides him. A telepathic connection develops. Elliott wants to help E.T. get home, while the government is searching for him.
