Faszination Astronomie: die Chancen für eine sternenklare Nacht

In the organizer's words:

The starry night sky that inspired Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Night" has shaped navigation, art and science for centuries. But is such a view in the Milky Way typical or the result of particularly favorable cosmic circumstances? Using star catalogs, three-dimensional reconstructions of interstellar dust based on Gaia data and high-resolution simulations, we investigate how the local interstellar medium influences the visibility of stars.

Our solar system is currently located inside a large cavity of thin, hot gas, the so-called local bubble, which is thought to have been formed by several supernova explosions over the past 15 million years or so. A better understanding of this structure is important as it both shapes our immediate galactic environment and influences extragalactic observations. In this talk, Prof. Klessen will present current work at Heidelberg University and report on the challenges and progress in trying to better understand our cosmic neighborhood.

Ralf Klessen is Professor of Astrophysics at Heidelberg University and works at the Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (ITA). His main scientific interests are the identification and characterization of the physical processes that determine the structure and dynamical evolution of the interstellar medium, as well as star formation in the present and early universe.
