Using the example of the German deserter Johann, this feature film shows that the consequences of the Second World War were still felt even in remote villages in Brazil. Johann sells medicines. He drives across the country in an old pick-up truck and uses a movie to advertise the purchase of aspirin. On the way, he befriends the hitchhiker Ranulpho, who becomes his traveling and business partner.

At first, the war is only present in the radio news, which reports on bloody battles in Europe and attacks by German submarines on Brazilian ships in the Atlantic. But when Brazil also declares war on the Nazi regime in 1942, Johann is suddenly faced with the alternative of either being deported to Germany (and having to fight against Allied friends like Ranulpho in case of doubt) or going to an internment camp for Germans in Brazil.

The road movie with its award-winning leading actors was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005 and was nominated by Brazil for the Oscar for Foreign Film.
