At the invitation of the Filmbüro NW and the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, filmmaker and artist Shelly Silver (New York) is coming to Cologne for a public film evening and a two-day film seminar for KHM students.

The filmmaker and artist Shelly Silver, who has won numerous international awards, is coming to Cologne from December 15 to 17 at the invitation of the Filmbüro NW and the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Shelly Silver (*1957 in Brooklyn) works at the interface between photography, film and video art and has been a professor of moving image at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Columbia University in New York since 2009. Some of her more than twenty films were made in her examination of German reality, such as the reunification film "Former East/Former West" (1994) and the work about young female visitors to the Museum für bildende Künste in Leipzig "Girls/Museum" (2020).

Shelly Silver will present one of her first films "Meet the People" (1986, 16 min.) and a current film "a tiny place that is hard to touch" (2019, 39 min.), which premiered at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival, in a public film evening on Friday, December 15, 7 pm, KHM auditorium. Following the film presentation, Dr. Anja Dreschke, media ethnologist, filmmaker and curator, will hold a discussion with Shelly Silver in English.

In a two-day film seminar "The touch of an eye" (December 16 and 17), Shelly Silver will give students at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne a deep insight into her decades of filmmaking practice. The workshop will focus on her creative process - from the initial idea to shooting, editing and distribution. Shelly Silver will talk about her relationship to genre, form, ethics, resistance and the importance of openness, experimentation and risk.

The "Filmische Begegnung" is an event organized by the Filmbüro NW in cooperation with the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The work of the Filmbüro NW is supported by the Cultural Office of the City of Cologne.
