In the organizer's words:
EMBL Foldscope Photography Workshop: Discover a Hidden World!
Join EMBL’s free Foldscope photography workshop and discover the extraordinary details of everyday life. Using a Foldscope—a powerful paper microscope—participants will examine leaves, pond water, and other natural treasures, revealing a fascinating microscopic world that normally remains hidden.
The workshop will be led by Heidelberg-based photographer Jochen Steinmetz, curator of the Westend Gallery at Dezernat#16 in Bergheim. Drawing on his experience in photography and visual storytelling, he’ll demonstrate creative photography techniques and show how microscopic discoveries can be transformed into striking images and works of art. Participants are welcome to bring a smartphone or tablet with a camera; tablets will also be available during the workshop.
The workshop is aimed at children ages 8 to 12 and their families. Together, young researchers and their parents will discover the exciting connection between science and creativity. Parents are warmly invited to participate, but participation is not required.
Selected photographs taken during the workshop will be presented at the EMBL Festival of Science and Curiosity on September 25, 2026—a free public festival celebrating science, creativity, and discovery.
No prior knowledge is required—just curiosity!
This workshop will use Foldscope microscopes (https://foldscope.com/).
