LIVE:
Natty Bo & The Top Cats (London)
Akatz (Bilbao)
Slightly Rude (Cologne)
Followed by a ska, reggae & soul party
The celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the Freedom Sounds Festival come to an end with a ska special at the Christmas Ball: Natty Bo & The Top Cats and Akatz, two heavyweights of the European ska scene, are expected to perform exclusively in Germany!
"Authentic Jamaican Ska, Rocksteady & Reggae from South London" promises the all-star band led by the bon vivant and bird of paradise Natty Bo, who enjoys a legendary reputation as a DJ, performer and frontman (also of Ska Cubano and Natty Congeroo & The Flames of Rhythm, among others). He founded the Top Cats in 1996 and gathered many exceptional musicians from Brixton around him - such as Robin Hopcraft (Soothsayers), Trevor Edwards (Jazz Warriors, Redskins, Lilly Allen) or the Japanese saxophonist Megumi "Miss Megoo" Mesaku.
In 2016, Akatz from the Basque Country performed for the first time ever in Germany, at the Freedom Sounds Festival in Gebäude 9. Although completely unknown in this country until then, the band from Bilbao immediately swept the audience away with their very melodic, danceable and super tight sound. The many new fans then had to wait seven long years. But now the time has finally come: to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary, Akatz are presenting us with a performance at the Christmas Ball.
The evening will be opened by the young band Slightly Rude from Cologne, who play dubby reggae and ska with Latin American influences.
At the party that follows, Natty Bo will be spinning some of his infamous ska, jump blues and early reggae records - reverently supported by the Freedom Sounds DJ crew. It will be Christmassy, wild and wonderful!
Admission: €25 (plus fees) in advance, €30 at the box office.
