The Historical Archive with Rhenish Picture Archive invites you to an open day. The occasion is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Rheinisches Bildarchiv (RBA), which has performed a variety of tasks as the visual memory of the city of Cologne since 1926. In order to present these, various themed tours will provide exclusive insights into the work areas of the Rheinisches Bildarchiv and thus allow visitors to experience how a modern image archive works.

Photos have not only been manipulated since the introduction of digital photography, but analog processes have always involved complex editing until the final print. Numerous historical photographs in the Rheinisches Bildarchiv bear witness to this. In this guided tour, we will show you the most diverse and mostly hidden work steps and techniques of photo retouching using the sample collection and selected exhibits from our holdings. Get to know the invisible traces of image manipulation better.
