In life as in play, Oskar Werner was excessive and uncompromising. Bernhard Dechant, Sophie Resch and Stefan Sterzinger follow this maxim to examine the myth and reality surrounding the Austrian actor, director and alcoholic. The main focus is on the interaction between genius, addiction and sensationalism. Her homage thus degenerates into a merciless examination of Austrian society's ambivalent approach to the popular drug alcohol. Is there a line between the birth of tragedy from the womb of intoxication and the need for therapy - and if so, where does it run?
Dechant and Werner, linked by their profession and addiction, have discussed art and intoxication on various stages. After Werner drank himself to death in front of his audience, his spirit lingers on in a collage of quotes and video recordings of interviews with colleagues and psychologists. In the company of the dead or immortal, Dechant self-critically confronts his own relationship to delirium and questions the personal and social function of legal and illegal drugs.
Together with director Sophie Resch, Dechant's ten-year confrontation with his colleague has now been condensed into a gripping and challenging monodrama, subtly accompanied and enhanced by the musical counterpoint of Stefan Sterzinger's accordion.
