»Gerta Schnirch« ARTE-Filmpremiere & Gespräch mit Kateřina Tučková
In the organizer's words:
Introduction: Martin Krafl (Czech Literature Center)
Moderator: Zuzana Jürgens (Adalbert Stifter Association)
Discussion: Barbara Häbe (ARTE)
A spectacular kickoff to the Czech Republic’s 2026 Book Fair appearance: With her debut novel *Gerta. The German Girl* (Klak Verlag // German translation by Iris Milde), Kateřina Tučková has become one of the most important voices in Czech literature.
Now the acclaimed novel is being adapted into a lavishly produced two-part ARTE television miniseries (directed by Tomáš Mašín). Gerta grows up in Brno, Moravia; her mother is Czech, her father German—and a fervent supporter of Hitler. As society crumbles, so does the family. And in 1945, Gerta is forced to flee with many others on the Brno Death March. Starring: Barbora Váchová, Milena Steinmasslová, Oskar Hes, and Johann Von Bülow.
We will screen the first part of the film (running time: 85 minutes, original version with subtitles // Part 2: airing on ARTE starting in October) and will be joined afterward by author Kateřina Tučková for a discussion.
Organizers: ARTE in cooperation with CZECHIA 2026 // Literaturhaus Foundation // Adalbert Stifter Association, Munich
