PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT KNOCKIN' ON THE DOOR
THE NEW ALBUM FROM GLENN ALEXANDER & SHADOWLAND
"I love the album, some of the lyrics are off the chain great, as well as the singin', playin', mix...well...the whole shebang. I'm now the total GA fan. You got the whole package at your fingertips..."
Bill Champlin - multi Grammy Award-winning artist
"I think it sounds great. I like the funk aspect, the horns sound terrific and you also sound terrific, (both) playing and singing. And I was very impressed by the lyrics. I think it's a fine piece of work and I will be mentioning it on stage. Get ready to roll in
hundred-dollar bills all around the living room floor. Seriously, excellent work." ."
Southside Johnny Lyon - legendary leader of the Asbury Jukes
"Alexander himself is a bit of a shadowy phantom. Raised on Southern Rock and Mid-west Blues, he's studied jazz and progressive rock and plays the six-string like a feral beast ... It's rock and roll, slathered in funky soul with a machine-gun guitar at its forefront. It's Glenn Alexander and company at their very best."
J.D. Nash - American Blues Scene
"Alexander is a virtuoso guitarist, and this band lets him stretch out in a blues-soul vein."
Jay Lustig - NJArts.net
"Mr. Alexander, you make the best records. Great feel and love the horns..."
Jim Stephany - Nashville guitarist and producer
"I knew in the first 15 seconds that this was for me; cool swishing guitars and red-hot horn section hit me like a left hook; and when Glenn Alexander's rough around the edges voice joined them, I was out for the musical count."
Rocking Magpie - British music blog
"Fine craftsmanship from a versatile musician who packs his guitar spins into inspired rootsy song work..."
Written In Music - Dutch music blog
Knockin' On The Door - the long-awaited follow-up to Glenn Alexander & Shadowland's acclaimed self-titled debut album - has arrived and it's already got people talking! Like its successful predecessor, this album lives in the blues/rock world and promises to deliver "guitar- driven, horn-laced, in-your-face, soulful, blues-drenched music," but throws some funky and greasy stuff in the skillet for good measure.
And all it takes is one listen and you can tell there are no flashy bells and whistles - just a group of great musicians playing and singing their hearts out.
The new album invites you to sink your teeth into ten, deeply personal, songs, all composed by guitarist extraordinaire Glenn Alexander, an artist who has toured the world extensively with his music and shared the stage with such luminaries as Levon Helm, Allen Toussaint, Chico Hamilton, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Bill Champlin, Southside Johnny and many, many others. Knockin' On The Door also has covers of two of Alexander's favorite songs: the well-known classic "Born Under A Bad Sign (performed the Shadowland way, but with a nod of respect to Albert King's definitive version) and "I Can't Change It," a beautiful ballad by the great Frankie Miller. Knockin' On The Door also features the legendary Mike Finnigan - one of Alexander's early musical influences - on organ and vocals, as well as a stunning
featured vocal by Oria on "I Had To Go Through Heaven To Get To Heaven."
Glenn Alexander & Shadowland is a band with a big sound - a killing rhythm section, three horns, backup singers and is comprised of several members of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, including Chris Anderson (Southside Johnny, Celia Cruz); John Isley (Southside Johnny, Diana Ross); and Neal Pawley (Southside Johnny, Tom Jones). Shadowland also boasts Greg Novick (Bernie Worrell); Dave Anthony (Dennis DeYoung, Glen Burtnik) and Oria on lead and background vocals. All are accomplished musicians in their own right, but together form a super group that combines rock, soul, blues and roots music in a unique and rockin' way.
