The Globe Ensemble Berlin brings Shakespeare’s most frequently performed tragedy to the stage in the finest tradition of popular theater: this arguably best-known love story is told through rich language and live music, featuring masked performances and fight scenes, and in a unique translation that is both fresh and poetic. A young love full of passion and fire clashes with the age-old hatred between two rival families. The themes of young love, ancient hatred, rivalry, passion, fear of loss, power and powerlessness, a willingness to take risks, moral courage, and ultimately the question of the meaning of human existence in the face of death are woven through a web of unfortunate coincidences. Only with the death of the two lovers does the hatred—which has almost become a tradition—come to an end, and Romeo and Juliet become martyrs in a senseless war.
