"God Bless NASA" is a collection of short stories. What they have in common is
they captivate readers with their touching humor and their humorous—even satirical—observations of
grotesque aspects of our everyday lives. The focus is always on the author’s
unresolved, personal relationship the author has with the rapidly changing world,
to himself, to his adopted home of Cologne, to his youth in Trittau (a
backwater in Schleswig-Holstein near Hamburg), the love of his life, and the
most beautiful child in the world.
Lerch focuses on precise comic timing, and his work
one can undoubtedly discern his collaboration with comedians such as Kurt Krömer and Olaf Schubert
, he explores his existence—marked by self-doubt and irony—
and his coming to terms with this brave new world. Sometimes it’s
mundane things like botched, homemade marzipan that he, as a hom-
sends in small batches to the Niederegger company as a tribute to his mother (who for years
), sends in small lumps to the Niederegger company; his attempt to
find a replacement for his part-time job because he’s managed to snag a concert ticket that seemed out of reach
and one can already
foresee his further failure. In other words, stories that make us all exclaim: “That’s exactly what I’ve
been through before!”
But also his decision to give up high-grade marijuana,
the murder of a life-size baby doll, and the resulting
compensation payments to his niece, his failure as an elite conscript in the
Bundeswehr, the perm, and the NASA terrycloth pajamas he inherited from his father
or sharing a joint with Jean-Claude Van Damme and a sea
on his parents’ balcony—are all topics covered in this book.
