How was the NSDAP leadership able to transform the German population into a violent criminal collective? The answer is multifaceted: The Nazi dictatorship promised social advancement and prosperity, kept people on the edge of their seats, entangled them in a web of guilt and shame, and stoked fears of defeat to mask and numb their dwindling belief in victory. Thus, the “people’s community” became a “criminal community,” and 18 million soldiers terrorized Europe. Götz Aly analyzes the Nazi methods, some of which are frighteningly relevant today.
