Successful lawyer Peter Banning knows no rest: he is always available and puts the demands of his work above the needs of his family. Until one night his two children disappear without a trace, leaving only a note from Captain James Hook. Peter is then confronted by his grandmother with his true identity. He is Peter Pan - the boy who didn't want to grow up. Despite having no memories of his childhood, he must travel to Neverland to save his children and perhaps even himself.
Steven Spielberg directs the film as a sequel to the story by J. M. Barrie, which had previously been adapted extremely successfully as a live-action film (1924) and as an animated film (1953) and is part of the cultural memory of Americans. The sequel is imaginative, but also surprisingly dark. As a modern fairy tale, the film deals with social issues in the here and now of the late 20th century and pleads for more (inter)humanity.
