Alexander Zemlinsky's "Lyric Symphony" for soprano, baritone and orchestra is a gem of late Romanticism and is considered a companion piece to Mahler's "Song of the Earth." Here, award-winning Romanian singer Iulia Maria Dan and Lithuanian bass-baritone Kostas Smoriginas are in their element.
After a 50-year slumber, Zemlinsky's "Lyric Symphony" was rediscovered in the 1970s. It tells of longing, love and farewell in a dialogue between male and female voices and is based on poems by the Indian Nobel Prize winner Robindranath Tagore. Iulia Maria Dan with her velvety soprano and exceptional bass-baritone Kostas Smoriginas are a dream cast, and the rising young French conductor Ariane Matiakh leads Die Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen.
