Sir Antonio Pappano has been conducting the venerable Royal Opera House in London for more than 20 years, and now new tasks await the conductor in the English capital when he succeeds Sir Simon Rattle as chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Only a few months after Pappano took up his post, the promising artist-combo will be giving a guest performance in Cologne with a program that shows the full diversity of the orchestra. Lili Boulanger's impressionistic depictions of nature meet Sergei Rachmaninoff's lush, flowing late Romanticism. In between is the Violin Concerto by Samuel Barber, which sets off brilliant virtuoso fireworks in the breathtaking final movement.
