Four young musicians from Cologne will be performing the music of Root 70 tonight—one of the most influential and enduring bands in European jazz history. Since 1999, the band led by trombonist Nils Wogram has featured Hayden Chisholm, Matt Penman, and Jochen Rückert.

Lewin Losemann, Carlotta Armbruster, Xaver Feest, and Jack Wang perform Root 70’s pieces in the same lineup as their role models: irregular time signatures, quarter-tones, and intricate melodic lines that still sound so light and melodic. Particularly distinctive is the band’s sound, which—largely thanks to the interplay between Wogram and Chisholm—carries an incredible warmth.

A tribute to one of jazz’s greatest bands, performed by four young musicians with their own distinct voices.
