"Time Place Action" combines two contrasting principles: ambient, field recordings, and musique concrète use musical elements sparingly—as few sounds as possible create the greatest atmosphere. Jazz musicians, on the other hand, draw on the full range of their musical expression to respond to their surroundings with sensitivity, agility, and communicativeness. In their collaboration, Jens Düppe and Gregor Schwellenbach bring these two approaches together. The audio recordings take listeners to places ranging from Guayana to the Alpine foothills; they are memories of encounters, landscapes, and the band members’ family histories. The result is a poetry reminiscent of Luc Ferrari’s musique anecdotique. Frederik Köster (tp), Lars Duppler (p), Christian Ramond (kb), and Jens Düppe (dr) respond to this with sensitivity, openness, and a joy of playing.
