Structured, open and hardworking, Jordan Mackampa is infectious and exuberant in 2023 and has finally reached a point where he feels comfortable with himself and his work as a singer and songwriter. He likes to reference musical role models like Brandy - for him, Full Moon is a seminal work for many R&B artists. Conversations in and around music from his perspective illustrate his understanding of the art form and his calling in the sector.
Jordan's ability to express himself musically was inherited from his mother's ear. Although not a musician herself, she often filled the rooms of Jordan's London home with music from Curtis Mayfield to Whitney Houston, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye, feeding the ears of the inquisitive Mackampa. But his first, bold experience with music that took him away and was his own took place at a youth center near his home. "I knew I wanted to perform," Jordan enthuses. Unsure if it was his spirit, God or a combination of both forces, he signed up to perform for the first time - he was a freshman in adolescence at the time.
Mackampa takes elements of Prince, Bobby Brown or Usher and unapologetically adds a je ne sais quoi to these templates for how raw his manifestation of the form is.
