A racist sentence in a school essay. Just as she’s about to mark it in red, she hesitates. Didn’t she hear that on the radio once before? So she leaves the sentence as is, because what someone says on the radio, a teacher isn’t allowed to cross out in a student’s notebook. And as she continues reading, she keeps hearing the radio: it howls, it barks, it coos, it threatens—and the newspapers print it, and the children—they copy it down...

Amid the global rise of right-wing parties, Horváts’s novel takes on a frightening relevance. Director Markolf Naujoks casts a ruthless gaze on a society in flux and raises the question of individual responsibility at a time when the values of peaceful coexistence are under threat.
