(K)ein Puppenheim. Alte Rollenspiele und neue Menschenbilder

Contemporary art from the Goetz Collection in the Puppet Theater / Showmanship Collection.

Puppets are present in many areas of our lives and exert a considerable attraction on us - whether in the children's room, at the fair or on the theater stage. They fascinate not only as figurative replicas of human beings, but also as embodiments of secret desires, fears and desires. At the same time, they are to be understood as a mirror of society and its diverse role models in history and the present. This ambivalence is also reflected in the works of visual artists from the Goetz Collection who have dealt with the theme of the doll in different ways. In this interdisciplinary compilation, they enter into a dialogue with the Puppentheater/Schaustellerei collection of the Munich City Museum as well as with historical photographs. More than 500 works by approximately 50 artists and craftspeople are on view in a diverse course at the Munich City Museum, including films by Kara Walker and Nathalie Djurberg, photographs by Cindy Sherman and Laurie Simmons, and sculptures by Andreas Slominski and Thomas Schütte.

The exhibition critically questions the permanent exhibition Puppentheater/Schaustellerei, which was on view at the Munich Stadtmuseum from 1984 to 2022. Its architecture is broken through, creating new perspectives and freedom - a look into the history and future of the Munich City Museum at the same time.
