The Münchner Stadtmuseum is the largest municipal museum in Germany, not only because of its spaciousness in the historical parts of the building from different eras, but also thanks to its multifaceted collections. These include applied art, urban culture, photography, graphics/paintings, advertising art, puppet theater/exhibition, music and fashion. The Film Museum and the Von Parish Costume Library are also part of the Munich City Museum's collections.

The building complex of the Münchner Stadtmuseum is being structurally and conceptually prepared for the future and is being extensively renovated and converted for this purpose. The museum will therefore be closed from January 8, 2024 until probably 2031. The Film Museum of the Münchner Stadtmuseum, with its extensive archive of historical films, will continue to offer a daily changing cinema program until June 2027, except on Mondays. The Stadtcafé will also remain open until June 2027.
