Antonín Dvořák was quite capable of making fun of the violoncello. Thus he described it as a "piece of wood" that "shrieks above and hums below." His true, genuine and deep love for the cello, however, is reflected in the solo concerto masterfully played by Kian Soltani.
Written in 1894/1895, Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto, which is also characterized by glorious melos, is one of the milestones of the repertoire. And its expressive richness is traced by Kian Soltani, who was trained by cello legend Ivan Monighetti. The second main work of the program, conducted by the Russian Tugan Sokhiev, is a richly tonal and effectively pulsating cross-section of the orchestral suites compiled by Sergei Prokofiev from his great Shakespeare ballet "Romeo and Juliet.
