KONZERT: JAZZ-KONTRABASS TRIFFT GAGAKU
In the organizer's words:
This concert-talk combines improvised music withGagaku, the traditional Japanese court music.
Cologne-based jazz double bassistLukas Kellerperforms alongside the Cologne Gagaku Ensemble.
Instruments used include the Japanese mouth organ, the shō, and the dragon flute, the ryūteki.
Gagaku has been practiced in Japan as ritual music for over 1,200 years. Originally, the music was not intended for an audience, but rather for the deities as forces of nature.
As a result, the sounds seem “pre-human”—they evoke a state of intentionlessness, stillness, and immediate presence.
