"Wildly romantic mixture of American folk, blues, country and punk attitude [...] "
With his poetically dark songs - not without good reason repeatedly labeled as "folk noir" - the Finn Mäkkelä is certainly one of the most exciting artists currently on the European songwriter scene. Painfully beautiful song material that brings the folk tradition of storytelling into the 21st century, coupled with a stage presence and intensity rarely seen before, have made the performer one of the genre's outstanding live acts. Or as the Nürnberger Nachrichten describes it in a review of the current album "Dog & Typewriter" (9pm Rec/Broken Silence): 'Razor-sharp song poetry, as rough as the asphalt of the road.
Mäkkelä's consistent avoidance of the mainstream has earned him a cultural prize from the city of Nuremberg, a nomination for the German Folk Award, commissions for theater music and a loyal following over the years, but it is still simply too unwieldy for the masses. No improvement in sight. Emotional shows somewhere between Strummer, Cohen and Waits.
"Mäkkelä plays the soundtrack for the road movie of their own lives, bitter, distorted and yet strangely beautiful."
