Konzert: Ragas unterm Sternenhimmel

In this year’s edition of “Ragas Under the Starry Sky,” we warmly invite you to join us on a journey through the galaxies to the far reaches of the universe. Our musical guides, Sebastian Dreyer (sitar) and Nilanjan Dutta (tabla), have put together a truly intergalactic musical program for you from the rich repertoire of Indian classical raga music—one that will make you forget the constraints of time and space. 

Marvel at the splendor of the Milky Way and the beauty of Saturn! Fly with us through the cosmic web of galaxies to gas nebulae and the remnants of long-extinct suns! It’s no coincidence that the accompanying musical program comes from an up-and-coming spacefaring nation. So put on your helmet, buckle up, and keep your tricorder within reach—the countdown is on!

Sebastian Dreyer is one of the few European instrumentalists dedicated to Indian raga music in its traditional form. In his playing, he combines the technical capabilities of the sitar with the subtle expressive techniques of classical Indian vocal music. His interpretations of ragas are narrative in nature and take the audience on captivating sonic journeys. Sebastian Dreyer learned to play the sitar in Germany and India under Gisela Tarwitt and Partha Chatterjee. He performs internationally, teaches, and has contributed to various film, television, and theater productions.

Nilanjan Dutta is a Berlin-based tabla player of the Farukhabad Gharana. His musical training began at the age of six under his father’s guidance and later led him to All India Radio as a child performer. He studied with the renowned tabla masters Kamal Chakraborty and Ravindra Yavagal and earned the “Sangeet Visharad” degree from the Prayag Sangeet Samiti. As a soloist and accompanist for vocal and instrumental music, he blends the tradition of Hindustani classical music with the diverse musical influences of his adopted home, Berlin. Nilanjan Dutta performs in India and Europe and is a regular participant in cross-genre artistic projects.
