Robert Schumann: Overture to "Genoveva" op. 81, Violin Concerto in D minor WoO 1, Symphony No. 2 in C major op. 61

Sir Simon Rattle, who last appeared at the Musikfest in 1996, will close the festival in the Glocke. Back then, the maestro, who was chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker from 2002-2018, made a guest appearance with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Rattle has been working with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, which has been one of the world's top original sound ensembles for over three decades, on a regular basis since 2018. With Robert Schumann, the focus is now on a central figure of Romantic music. The composer experienced the work on his Second Symphony as a healing process from a severe depression and accordingly, it follows the path from darkness to light from the melancholy beginning to the euphoric finale. The violin concerto, written for the legendary Joseph Joachim, was never performed during Schumann's lifetime. After an eventful reception history, it is now one of the great Romantic solo concertos with its deep sensitivity. The remarkable violinist Isabelle Faust has also contributed to this renaissance as a highly sensitive interpreter. A musical summit meeting that will reveal Schumann's emotionally complex sound worlds in a refreshingly new way!
