Beethoven-Zyklus - Musikfest Bremen

Ludwig van Beethoven is a giant of music history. In addition to his nine symphonies and 32 piano sonatas, the 16 string quartets are also among the composer's major works. Composed over a period of almost 30 years between 1798 and 1826, they bear witness to his creativity and love of experimentation. In them, Beethoven repeatedly went far beyond the usual boundaries of the genre at the time and thus significantly influenced subsequent generations.

The Quatuor Ebène, which has enjoyed a top position among the world's leading string quartets for years, is now dedicating itself to this "Mount Everest of chamber music". First appearing at the Musikfest in 2007, it has been continuously celebrated for its energetic and creative interpretations. By the beginning of 2020, the Quatuor Ebène had already recorded the complete string quartets under the motto "Beethoven around the World" on a live tour through 21 countries on five continents. When the recording was then released in the same year in honor of the composer's 250th birthday, the reviews were glowing - here are just two examples: "Probably the best complete recording of the Beethoven quartets at the moment" (RBB Kultur) or "You can certainly play Beethoven differently. But not better. And certainly not more moving" (Hamburger Abendblatt).

The partner for this Beethoven cycle is the long-established Philharmonic Society of Bremen, whose 200-year history in the Hanseatic city is closely linked to the composer's work and which sponsored the Quatuor Ebène's first Musikfest appearance in 2007. In the small hall of the Glocke, you can now experience the French ensemble with its very own approach to these works. Spread over six concerts, quartets from the early, middle and late creative periods will be fascinatingly juxtaposed. In doing so, the Quatuor Ebène is deliberately following the motivation to allow the audience to experience at first hand that Beethoven's early works are no mere preparation for his middle and late works. With its emotional and spontaneous approach to the music, the Quatuor Ebène guarantees a fresh look at every single composition!
