Founded in 1819, the Düsseldorf Art Academy quickly developed into the leading academy in the German-speaking world. Its work coincided with the Romantic era, a time in which emotion, passion, individuality and individual experience as well as the human soul were the defining themes of painting. Landscapes, portraits and genre scenes became the trademarks of the Düsseldorf school of painting. A good business sense and a network that transcended national borders brought her and her students international fame.
