The German troops are outside Paris. Georg escapes to Marseille at the last moment. In his luggage, he has the legacy of the writer Weidel, who took his own life out of fear of his pursuers [...] Georg assumes Weidel's identity and receives a Mexican visa. When he meets Weidel's wife Marie, he immediately falls in love with her. But how can he confess the truth to her? And how can he live with the lie? In his film based on the novel of the same name by Anna Seghers, Christian Petzold transfers the story of the German occupation of the Second World War to the here and now of present-day Marseille, which may alienate the viewer at first, but increasingly opens up the film and lends the story a universal relevance.
