They were self-assured, radical, and subversive: Before 1989, female filmmakers from the GDR and Hungary addressed social injustices and unsparingly documented themselves and their surroundings. Their works are artistic testimonies of resistance, self-assertion, and the search for freedom.
On August 21 and 22, a two-part series will present selected short films, accompanied by a supporting program.
The second evening opens with a discussion. Hungarian directorMari Cantuand German film scholarConny Klaußwill share their personal experiences and discuss the general situation of filmmakers of that era, linking these to current questions of memory and artistic expression.
