It's a busy time at "The Grill" in Manhattan and money has disappeared from the till. All the undocumented chefs are under investigation and Pedro (Raúl Briones) is the prime suspect. He is a dreamer and troublemaker and is in love with Julia (Rooney Mara), a waitress from New York, who cannot get involved in a relationship with him. Rashid, owner of "The Grill", has promised to help Pedro with his papers and thus out of illegality. But a shocking confession from Julia provokes Pedro into an act that brings the conveyor belt of one of the busiest kitchens in the city to a complete standstill.

LA COCINA is a tragic and comic tribute to all the invisible people who keep our restaurants running and our stomachs full as they chase their version of the American dream. The movie delves deep into the hectic, chaotic and often merciless life behind the scenes of a large tourist restaurant. In a relentless rhythm, the film sends viewers through the inner workings of the kitchen, where personal dramas and social tensions clash among the cooks, waitresses and other employees. In this film, Ruizpalacios captures not only the pressures of the kitchen, but also the humanity revealed in moments of despair, solidarity and small triumphs. With LA COCINA, celebrated Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios brings a gripping adaptation of "The Kitchen", the iconic play by Arnold Wesker, to the big screen. Two-time Oscar® nominee Rooney Mara ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", "Carol") and the charismatic Raúl Briones ("Asfixia", "A Cop Movie") shine in the leading roles.
