Young Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is a fighter pilot in the United States Navy. On a delicate mission, Maverick and his weapons systems officer Nick "Goose" Bradshaw must disobey the orders of their commander "Stinger" to help a fellow soldier who has suffered a panic attack. As a result, Maverick and Goose are reluctantly recommended by Stinger for training at the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, known as "Top Gun". There, Maverick immediately engages in a rivalry with flight student Tom "Iceman" Kazanski. His reckless flying style also gets him into trouble. Although he regularly wins flight battles, e.g. against instructor Lieutenant Commander Rick "Jester" Heatherly, he breaks the rules of engagement and is not exactly a team player.
