Verdi's opera project was initially met with fierce criticism. It seemed too daring to bring a contemporary subject to the opera stage with a courtesan - and thus a woman on the fringes of society - at its center. However, it was precisely these characters that inspired Verdi to create a musical-dramatic approach that has rightly made "La traviata" one of the most famous works in opera history. Director Luise Kautz, who last took Mannheim audiences into the visionary worlds of "Tristan and Isolde" in 2021, tells the story of "La traviata" entirely through the psychology of the characters and at the same time examines how, in a world without natural order, without predetermined sanctity, the individual remains alone in the search for meaning. In the face of approaching death, Violetta chooses the path out of the collective stupor and asks herself what it is worth living for.
