What it's about
In "A Spectacle of Herself", circus performer Laura Murphy shows herself to be vulnerable and dares to take a deeply personal look at the question of what it means to take up space and be seen. Laura Murphy mischievously addresses the extent to which characteristics that make her stand out in everyday life can be celebrated and played out in the circus. Criticism and her love of the circus flow seamlessly into one another. With a twinkle in her eye, she tackles major themes such as mental health and personal identity and, en passant, reinvents the figure of the clown in the circus.

Laura Murphy and her team stand for politically committed and interdisciplinary creations between experimental circus and stand-up performance. Her performances are witty, provocative and clever. In 2022, she drew standing ovations at the festival with her radical performance "contra" and received Summerhall's Mary Dick Award in 2023. "A Spectacle of herself" celebrates its German premiere in Cologne as a co-production with the CircusDanceFestival.
