Does our democracy have a listening problem? Or can listening even be dangerous? And what role do art and literature play in a society in which truth and freedom are increasingly under pressure?

Kathrin Röggla deals with these and many other questions in her latest book Nichts sagen. Hear nothing. See nothing, from which she will be reading with us on June 23. The starting point are observations of a present in which political conflicts and social crises are increasingly intertwined: At the "Reichsbürger" trial in Frankfurt, the enemies of the constitution are no longer just sitting in the dock, anti-Semitic slogans are being sprayed at universities, and climate change is being discussed surprisingly quietly. Everything seems hyper-political - including art.

As always, Kathrin Röggla roams through our present as a committed contemporary. She looks, listens, questions the words and risks her sentences to find new narrative forms. Because in the so-called polycrisis, not only social certainties but also the scope of literature are up for grabs. Are we still listening at all? Do we see the important things? Can we still talk to each other?

Following the reading, we would like to discuss the artistic and political challenges of our present with Kathrin Röggla.
