In the organizer's words:
Discover Archipelagic Thinking Together—with the Corosol Collective and Beate Thill at the Centre Culturel Français in Freiburg!
Through the concept of archipelagic thinking, the Martinican philosopherEdouard Glissantinvites us to encounter the “elsewhere” in order to break down the boundaries that constrain us in our imagination—just as the sea connects the islands of an archipelago. For Edouard Glissant, the world thus becomes a “Tout-Monde”—diverse and open.
Archipelagic thinking also shapes the literature of other Caribbean writers, such as Maryse Condé, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Dany Laferrière. Caribbean literature is associated with the global spread ofzouk; Anne-Catherine Girondin and Jorane Marelille are experts in this field and will also moderate the evening. Both are members of the Corosol collective, which promotes Caribbean culture in Freiburg. The event will feature translatorBeate Thill, who specializes in Francophone Caribbean literature and is the recipient of the City of Freiburg’s Reinhold Schneider Prize (2025).
