About the book: When Marissa loses her mother at the age of six, she follows her father, a marine biologist, to Thailand. There she meets Arielle, and an almost fairytale friendship develops: The two girls dive together into the depths of the reefs, learn to hold their breath and know the manta rays by name. But then a huge wave comes - and Arielle cannot escape it.

Years later, Marissa returns to New York. Disoriented and haunted by the memory of her friend, threatened by a new natural disaster, she must once again confront the past - and learn to survive in an uncertain world.

In her debut novel, Tara K. Menon, born in India, raised in Singapore and now a lecturer in English literature at Harvard, tells of friendship and loss, the fragile beauty of nature and the question of how we go on living when the sea takes something from us that we cannot get back.
