“ELEMENTS” – Jazz Meets Nature
Olivier Chavet’s Second Solo Album (Release Date: March 20, 2025)
Seclusion and a close connection to the surrounding natural landscape also played a significant role in the creation of his second album, “ELEMENTS.” But now it is time to bring the new album—with its nine soul-oriented jazz compositions—out of solitude and into the present.
Like its predecessor, “ELEMENTS” exudes a certain serenity in the face of the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This, too, is a message that Belgian musician and composer Olivier Chavet wishes to convey to listeners through his music.
What really matters at the end of the day? It’s a question everyone can ask themselves, and one to which, in Chavet’s view, there aren’t all that many answers. “I don’t believe that all the things that occupy us in everyday life are truly significant. What matters is that, at the end of the day, the positive aspects and a sense of connection to oneself and one’s surroundings endure,” says Chavet. “Mastering one’s own ego plays an essential role in this. That was also the case when composing my new album. Without that distance from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the album wouldn’t be what
it is.” Nature, with its elements of air, fire, water, and earth, reflects the source of the musician’s inspiration, stemming from a longing for an unpretentious life centered on simplicity. Chavet’s home in the rugged yet beautiful Eifel region plays a significant role in this.
The musical lineup—ranging from a trio to a quintet—also follows the model of the previous album, “RACINES.” Chavet once again found the right musicians in Belgium and Germany. Bassist Werner Lauscher and guitarist Daniel Chavet are, as on the debut album, constant companions. At the piano is Igor Gehenot, a Belgian jazz great who is well known on the Brussels scene.
The quintet is rounded out by Cologne-based trumpeter Matthias Schwengler, who replaces Heidi Bayer—also a Cologne resident—who contributed to the album’s preparation. As with “RACINES,” the “Fattoria Musica” recording studio in the Osnabrück suburbs, under the direction of Amsterdam-based sound engineer Chris Weeda, provided the ideal conditions for recording “ELEMENTS.”
