Mahler/Fondermann "New, used, borrowed & smoky"
Behind Mahler/Fondermann are Stephan Mahler and Ritchy Fondermann, who are both deeply rooted in the Hamburg music scene.
Stephan Mahler was not only a drummer, but above all a songwriter for the punk bands Slime (see the classic "Schweineherbst" from 1994), Screamer and Torpedo Moskau. He played with the legendary Jens Rachut in Angeschissen, Kommando Sonne-nmilch and Oma Hans.
He not only shaped Mask For with his gothic band (long before this term existed), which anticipated the now very popular "dark wave", but also compensated for his connection to Swans & Einstürzende Neubauten with his industrial project Faith-Healer. In the late 80s came Arm, with fricky punk-core, and George & Martha, with him this time as the singer of this atonal rock band, who were given the honor of being invited by John Peel to the BBC studios for a session.
Stephan Mahler is undisputedly a central figure in the Hamburg punk and underground scene from the late 70s to the present day, most recently with his post-punk band Belgrad.
Ritchy Fondermann, the music producer and owner of Hamburg's K-Klangstudio, has not only produced the last two Rocko Schamoni albums, but also the last "Bärchen und die Milchbubies", as well as the current album by the band Cryssis around "Die Toten Hosen" drummer Vom Ritchie. He is also known far beyond the borders of the country with his former bands Highschool Nightmare and above all Antikörper and has also published two novels as an author.
The collaboration between Mahler/Fondermann came about through the joint production of the second Belgrade production "Lysis", they realized how well they harmonized and began to implement musical ideas together in 2024.
"Neu, gebraucht, geliehen & verraucht", the album title of the resulting LP
is to be understood as quite programmatic: new songs were created, pieces were realized from previously unreleased compositions, as well as reinterpretations of already known titles (for example "Trauertränen" by Torpedo Moskau).
Musically, influences of punk, post-punk and folk can be heard.
Mahler/Fondermann are clearly connected to their common punk roots and yet open to diving into acoustic, sometimes spherical realms.
With lyrics in a clear poetic language about love, life, freedom and death, the result is a multi-layered, yet cohesive album by two musicians who have written Hamburg music history.
To bring their work to the stage, they will be joined by three other musician friends from Hamburg (including Felix Huber from Veranda Music on the keys), their live debut will take place as Mahler/Fondermann & the Mars on February 28, 2026 at Treibeis Hamburg - more dates to follow.
