Sergei Prokofiev: Violin Sonata No. 2
Matteo Cimatti leads through an evening of sonatas with unconventional music. A contemporary critic described Beethoven's violin sonatas op. 12 as "stubborn" - strong accents rather than pleasing melodies dominate. Ravel drew inspiration for his spirited sonata from the jazz and blues of the 1920s. Prokofiev also loved robust themes and a fast-paced interplay between the instruments.
