"Turn of Events" is a project founded by Matthieu Mazué in New York City in 2025. It brings together three musicians with strong and independent musical visions who are widely recognized for their exceptional improvisational skills. Mazué is joined by drummer Francisco Mela, a formative figure on the contemporary jazz scene who has played with McCoy Tyner and Kenny Barron, among others, and trumpeter Diego Hedez, a regular companion of double bassist William Parker.
Together they explore new sonic territories in a deliberately bass-less line-up - an artistic decision that frees the piano from its traditionally defined harmonic role. This absence opens up the space for a more transparent sound and a lighter, freer approach to piano playing. The dialog between piano and percussion becomes a central pillar - not only to support the trumpet, but also to redefine the traditional role of the piano as an accompanying instrument. The percussion unfolds a remarkable rhythmic freedom and shapes the contours of the improvisation with flexibility and ingenuity.
