Mendelssohn Schumann II | Kronberg Festival 2026 „Courage!“
In the organizer's words:
The second part of this double bill takes us from Mendelssohn’s poetic world of fantasy to one of Robert Schumann’s most personal works.
The incidental music for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is among Mendelssohn’s most imaginative creations. Fairy-like lightness, a nocturnal atmosphere, and sparkling orchestral colors combine to create music that has lost none of its magic to this day.
Next, the spotlight turns to Miklós Perényi. The Hungarian cellist performs Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A minor —a work of great introspection that consistently subordinates virtuosic display to musical expression. A continuous dialogue unfolds between the soloist and the orchestra, focused and free of superficial effect.
Together with Sir András Schiff and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, this evening will also mark a reunion of longtime musical companions. Mendelssohn and Schumann emerge as kindred spirits: poetic, free, and filled with the courage to take quiet sounds seriously.
