Michelle David & the true Tones – Soul/Jazz

Michelle David & The True-Tones emerged from the acclaimed project “The Gospel Sessions,” which was founded by musicians Paul Willemsen and Onno Smit. What began as pure, authentic reinterpretations of gospel music quickly evolved into a full-fledged band with a distinctive identity. With drummer Bas Bouma rounding out the core quartet, the group forged its own distinctive sound: gospel at its roots, confidently branching out into soul, funk, Afrobeat, and rhythm & blues.

With seven studio albums (The Gospel Sessions Vol. 1–4, Truth & Soul, and Brothers & Sisters), the band has created an impressive body of work that has garnered international acclaim. Highlights include BBC Radio 6 Music naming *Truth & Soul* “Album of the Year,” the French radio station FIP naming it “Album of the Month,” and an Edison Award nomination (the Dutch equivalent of the Grammys). On February 27, 2026, Michelle David & The True-Tones will release their most personal album to date: *Soul Woman*. With themes such as identity, healing, and growth at its core, the album reflects David’s own journey of self-discovery. “How can I ask others to take time to reflect on their lives if I don’t reflect on my own?” she asks. Musically, the album bridges the gap between timeless soul and contemporary grooves, drawing inspiration from legends such as Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Four Seasons, and D’Angelo. The result is a collection of songs that is both intimate and universal, translating personal truths into messages of self-empowerment and connection.
