The Bright Silence – Melodic Singer-Songwriter Rock

Moving from the U.S. to Germany in March 2020 was a life-changing experience for American musician Kevin Johnston in many ways. It is therefore no surprise that his dramatic and emotionally moving music resonates with people all over the world.

Johnston is the songwriter and lead singer of his rock band, The Bright Silence, and, with his unmistakable voice, is an exceptional musical talent. He skillfully weaves together influences that range from acoustic guitar pop to pure electro-rock. In this way, the Colorado-born artist creates captivating, downright epic music that is relatable and honest, while also getting under your skin.

His dynamic, theatrical, and impressively wide vocal range is reminiscent of Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke, while the determination in his stage presence brings to mind a 1970s Paul McCartney or Win Butler of Arcade Fire. His stylistically diverse lyrics also reflect a wide range of influences. These range from high-energy folk compositions à la Fleet Foxes to nuanced smart rock reminiscent of Madison Cunningham, all the way to catchy tunes à la Coldplay or Nada Surf.

Johnston is a born performer. His stage presence is captivating, whether on major stages or in clubs and bars across Europe and the U.S. Both his acoustic solo concerts and his rock shows with a full band impress with their unbridled energy and skillful interaction with the audience. The result is a concert experience worthy of the world’s finest stages that delights even the most discerning rock fans.

Born in Colorado and now living in Leipzig, Johnston founded the band The Bright Silence in 2010 amid the singer-songwriter scene in Brooklyn, New York. Since then, he has appeared on the U.S. TV show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” performing his own songs, served as frontman for the band and the eponymous show “The All-For-Nots” produced by Michael Eisner, collaborated with Kjartan Sveinsson of Sigur Rós at the New Museum in New York City, and, as frontman of the Ian Cooke Band, performed a Prince tribute in front of over 9,000 fans at the sold-out Red Rocks Amphitheater.

Johnston recorded and released a Christmas album in 2024. “Sind die Lichter angezündet | Finding Christmas in Saxony” reinterprets popular GDR winter music and German Christmas carols with Johnston’s characteristic sensitivity and reverence, infused with fresh and exciting energy and the distinctive flair typical of Bright Silence’s music.
