Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023 will be the final event for this year of our Migrant Feminism Literature and Education Series.
Natasha A. Kelly will read from her new book "Female. Black. German. - Why Feminism Must Demand More Than Gender Justice," which was published in late August 2023, and engage in conversation about it with Gina Hitsch.
Dr. Natasha A. Kelly, born in 1973, is a visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts, author and editor, curator, and visual artist. She works at the intersection of science and art, questioning Eurocentric concepts of knowledge, power, and the body from a Black feminist, decolonial perspective. Her central concern is to strengthen Black perspectives in science and the arts; she is currently spearheading the creation of an independent institute for Black German art, culture, and its sciences. Most recently, her works "Racism. Structural Problems Need Structural Solutions" (Atrium 2021) and "Black Feminism: Basic Texts" (Unrast 2019).
Gina Hitsch is a black German, founder of the association "Blacks in Cologne e.V." and activist for the rights of black people.
About the content of the book:
Far too often, white women tend to understand feminism one-dimensionally and oppression singularly. What is missing is an understanding that Black women and Women of Color face different forms of oppression simultaneously. In this book, Natasha A. Kelly shows how elitism and racial bias have long defined Western feminist discourse, preventing feminism from being open to all. To change that, she uses personal and collective experiences and historical highlights to tell the story of Black feminism in Germany.
