Mishpocha: Vortrag – Kann Pop uns noch retten?

"We Are Family", as Sister Sledge once said. Pop music has always created communities, brought people together who felt excluded from society and created a new home, a new family for them.

Hip-hop brought together the black community; disco, house and techno offered safe spaces for gender emancipation; punk rock was open to everyone who felt alienated, to proletarian children, to riot grrls, to Jews. But punk rock was and is also open to Nazis; large parts of hip-hop are marked by sexism and anti-Semitism; and the behavior of the techno scene after October 7th has disturbed many who believe in the emancipatory power of pop music. What about this power today? Can pop still be saved? Jens Balzer talks about this by looking from the present to history and back again.
