Multiple Voices & Spem in Alium

During the concert, it is possible to enter or leave the church every 10 minutes. There will be a joint listening walk before the concert. Meeting point: 13h in front of the entrance of the Christuskirche (Dorothee-Sölle-Platz 5, 50672 Cologne)

Two voices, forty lines, a state of emergency: Multiple voices radically rethinks "Spem in Alium", the Olympus of polyphonic vocal music. Terry Wey and Ulfried Staber together span three and a half octaves - and take on all 40 voices themselves!

Instead of choir: maximum precision. Instead of block: process. Voice by voice, the 40-voice motet is created live in the room - recorded, layered, played back. A growing sound structure from 16 loudspeakers that slowly closes around the audience.

What is otherwise overwhelming becomes comprehensible here: a Renaissance puzzle in real time. From the first voice in the afternoon to the complete 40-part sound at the chime of midnight. Not a re-enactment, but a creation.

ritual is a concert series - curated by Sophie Emilie Beha - which takes place from June to November on the 1st day of each month in various locations around the Stadtgarten, further information via the ritual homepage.
